Was there a point where open graphics drivers were *completely* non-existent? Back in 2005 I bought ATI based on the fact they had a FOSS driver, for R200. I know things were dire when they joined NVIDIA in a long period of proprietary stupidity shortly after that, but by then Intel was producing good-enough graphics hardware too.

Not completely non-existent. However after R200 there wasn't any real help from any of the major vendors for open source GPU support. The only thing available for post-R200 hardware was Intel and they didn't have a real GPU that was usable until the i915 chipset.

It seemed to me like usable R300 drivers didn't show up until well after you could no longer buy that hardware new.
