There are three open source projects which use gstreamer for trying to do live video mixing;

• TimVideos' gst-switch - https://github.com/timvideos/gst-switch (my project)
• C3VOC's voctomix - https://github.com/voc/voctomix
• Snowmix - https://sourceforge.net/projects/snowmix/

It will be interesting to see if we can take advantage of any of the new features in gstreamer 1.6 to get better results.
