*One statistics to cover them all...*

The Linux Counter revived with new website, new technologies and new
statistics

Nearly 24 years ago Linus Torvalds has announced his own operating
system in the minix usergroup. Just only two years later, in September
1993, Harald Tveit Alvestrand has created the offizial Counter for Linux
users. The so called Linux Counter Project became very popular and the
database with registered users and Linux machines has grown very fast.
The time gone by and the interest in this project has heavily decreased
over the years.

Until 2011, when Alexander Löhner has revisted the counter project where
he has registered somewhen in 2001. Löhner has revisited the project
page every few months since his registration and he noticed the lack of
interest from the linux community with every visit. In 2011 the project
was nearly dead and nobody has maintained the statistics since years.

During one of these visits in 2011, he decided to revive this cool
project. He contacted Harald Alvestrand and asked him directly if he
would be willing to give this project away.
Alvestrand agreed after he has heard what Löhner wanted to do and he
gave him the whole project codebase and the whole database.

In the next weeks and months, Löhner studied the code and then he has
registered a new domain linuxcounter.net and created a completely new
website and statistics generation around the existing database. He
started to announce this new and revived project and the database began
to grow again.

Since 2012 Harald Alvestrand has redirected the old domain
counter.li.org to the new domain linuxcounter.net and since then, The
New Linux Counter Project is the official Counter of Linux users.

In April 2015 Löhner decided to restructure the whole database and thus
he also created again a whole new website around the new database
structure. This time he has used modern techniques and frameworks like
Symfony2 and Bootstrap in order to also become responsive and useable on
small handhelds and smartphones.
Löhner also has developed a Android App and a RESTful API for easy
access to the statistics.

Actually he is at doing SEO (search engine optimization) and he is very
successful with that. He has started with SEO on a Google pagerank of 2
and an Alexa global rank of around 1,600,000. Since now the Google
pagerank has changed to 5 and the Alexa global rank is at 473,275.

Are you a Linux user? Du you own an Android smartphone, a Raspberry Pi
or are you the administrator of a big server farm?
Come and visit The Linux Counter Project on
https://www.linuxcounter.net, register an account and your linux boxes
and help us this way with generating better statistics and a better
guess of how many Linux users there are in the world.

Thank you very much!

Best regards
Alexander Löhner
