Interesting tactic to demotivating those doing the work and get those maintainers to leave Debian anywho at this point in time I actually recommend that any Debian derivatives look at this political not technical "delay" of Jesse and arguably misuse of the GR process as an opportunity to focus on integrating systemd better into their distribution since you give your end users the worst experience by providing them with half support, half migrate release.

Drop systemd-shim and other legacy bits and their support that needs dropping and go for a full systemd only integration, migrate what needs to be migrated and bear in mind that the timer units are only relevant to bootup, udev, unit startup, suspend, shutdown so if your component does not already depend on systemd but ships an cron job it should not be migrated.
( There seems to be some frantic motivation migrate every cron job to timer units which is just silly and adds dependency on systemd where there should be none )

You can't drop systemd-shim et al, that'd permanently disable Debian's the non-Linux ports.

Debian isn't going to do that any time soon.

I did not say Debian should drop it but "Debian derivatives" should and it would strike me as odd if they could not.

We all know that this yet another stunt by Ian is going to distract Debian's maintainers from preparing Jesse by forcing them to be debating this for atleast 2 weeks if not more and it would be a shame if Martin Pitt recent work [1] patching 215 in Ubuntu and reviewing some of Debian's patches cleaning them up in preparation for upstreaming would some how be stalled because of this political stunt of his.

systemd-shim doesn't even improve portability; the version current in jessie is only available for Linux since it depends on cgmanager, which is Linux-only. This GR is a total charade.
