This isn't limited to USB devices, you can do the same thing with SD cards, SATA hard drives, PCI network cards, etc (I've seen examples of each of these, it's not just theory)

USB is just the latest to be publicized.

Not really. It's trickier to get any of them to present as an input device, and in the presence of an iommu you shouldn't be able to get them to do arbitrary DMA either.
