I just don't get this very passive view where a company can just steal code and profit off it without obeying the rules of the license. If I wanted 13 years of effort to be exploited for some other company's benefit, I would have BSD-licensed my code. But I didn't BSD-license it -- it's GPL for a reason. They can't have it both ways; if they don't like the license then they shouldn't be using the software.

What we really need to be telling developers is to formally register their copyright. While people are quick to point out that you have the copyright when you create a work, this causes people to assume they get all the rights involved with having a copyright along with that. If you want to do anything other than meaningless, ignored threats, you need to register your copyright. It's the only way you can sue for statutory damages and attorney's fees. Registering a copyright is very cheap and doesn't need to be done by a lawyer:

And if you're not a USAian? I don't want anything to do with the American Legal System. That rule is just yet another example of the US using its legal system to rip off the rest of the world's IP ... :-(

Cheers,
