People need to stop considering private networks as secure. Unless here is a air-wall between it and the outside networks there are just too many holes in and out to automatically assume that nobody is able to get in and attack vulnerable systems or insecure protocols.

Talk to Iranian nuclear researchers about air wall security. :p

Mostly while the Linux kernel shouldn't be insecure itself, its role in providing security is for sure not always needed.

it might be a mistake to over generalize from a targeted attack on a high-value asset.
