Shuttleworth: U talking to me?

Ubuntu's Trusty Tahr has been released and that means it's time for a new development branch. Mark Shuttleworth has announced the name of the next Ubuntu release. "So bring your upstanding best to the table – or the forum – or the mailing list – and let’s make something amazing. Something unified and upright, something about which we can be universally proud. And since we’re getting that once-every-two-years chance to make fresh starts and dream unconstrained dreams about what the future should look like, we may as well go all out and give it a dreamlike name. Let’s get going on the utopic unicorn."

Nice name for the systemd version :-P

But nice plans. It doesn't really mention it, but thought this would be the Unity 8 version. Meaning: no more dependencies on anything GNOME (though not amazed if it takes a bit more than 14.10 to fully switch).

"time to walk a little uphill and, thereby, upstream" :-D

Is this the first Ubuntu release named after an animal that doesn't actually exist?

Are you sure unicorns don't exist? :-)

Only invisible pink unicorns exist. Obviously.

Hope they don't: <http://www.tor.com/stories/2013/09/equoid>. (Note: more than a little disturbing, though I suspect almost every commenter here has already read it!)

No, Ubuntu 9.04 was named after a rabbit with horns (Jackalope).

People like to argue if the Jackalope exists; it's pretty reasonable that rabbits with Shope Papilloma Virus[1] inspired the myth. Whether or not cancer-virus-infected rabbits are Jackalopes then becomes the point of contention.

Most rhinos have two to three horns. But I guess you mean https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis).

Well according to ASCII: [racketed ][pple. I'm assuming bugs in support for the MOS6502 will be fixed by then and the name will celebrate a release for the Apple ][. It will include yet another vision for Unity, this time aimed at 280×192 "HiRes" screens.
