I bet they saw it coming and thought about it. Obviously, there are benefits to collaboration and convergence and I'm glad they decided to go for that. A diverse ecosystem is good, no doubt about it, but there's a point where a better solution is just that - better.

Canonical has their strong points and their weak points.

Hopefully this will free up resources for their strong points; which is making Linux usable for a wider audience.

I guess this may change the game quite a bit. Debian only selected systemd for Jessie, but if the main supporter of Upstart moves to it, then it kind of makes systemd the default for all future Debian releases I guess...
