impact ALL Debian users and all users of all its derivatives, including Ubuntu and SteamOS
SteamOS is based on Debian and already uses systemd, so Debian choosing Upstart would cause social tension. OTOH, Ubuntu has already moved away from GNOME, Debian, and everyone else, so they'd have no problem working on Upstart by themselves—which is what they already do.

Why do people keep saying steamos uses systemd? The news articles about it say it uses sysvinit, the default init of Debian wheezy which it's based off of. I don't see why SteamOS would much care what init system is used, really.

Ah, you're right. SteamOS doesn't use systemd. Apologies.

In which case, I think from their perspective, Debian moving to either Upstart or systemd would be the same, so the argument employed by the comment I replied to continues to be invalid.

Uhh, Ubuntu has not moved away from being a Debian derivative.
