Cloudius Systems, HSA Foundation and Valve Join Linux Foundation
The Linux Foundation has three new members; Cloudius Systems, HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture) Foundation and Valve. "The newest Linux Foundation members represent both nascent open source endeavors as well as established industry leaders. Companies from diverse markets, such as gaming, cloud computing and virtualization are seeing the value of Linux and collaborative development to put them out in front of competitors. For example, Valve recently announced its plans to expand its Steam platform, with 65 million active accounts and games from hundreds of developers, into the living room with the Steam Machines project. An innovative living room device, the Steam Machines will be powered by a Linux-based operating system dubbed the Steam OS. At the same time, emerging cloud, virtualization, big data and device-driven computing companies are taking advantage of open development and collaboration to ignite innovation." FLOSS 2013: The survey for Open Source contributors 10 years later
The first FLOSS survey was launched in 2002. Now a second survey is underway. The deadline for taking the survey is December 6. "This time not only developers, but all kind of contributors to Open Source projects are asked to participate. How has the community changed in the last 10 years? In how far are the points of view similar? How is the composition of the community nowadays?"
Free Software Foundation Giving Guide
The FSF has released a giving guide for the holiday season. "'The Giving Guide is a map through the minefield of restrictive electronics and Web services that many will be seeking as gifts this season, just as one might shop for fair labor products from worker-owned cooperatives, or environmentally friendly products from local sources. There's no need to sacrifice your freedom or the freedom of the people you care about,' said Libby Reinish, campaigns manager for the FSF."
