The only thing you need for a separate /usr is a initramfs. This was mentioned as a requirement in one of those Gentoo NEWS files quite recently. Gentoo like to discuss for ages before rediscovering that the suggested solution was actually not that bad :P

Not aware of any hateful discussion in Gentoo. I do see various Gentoo users raising the same things over and over again.
