One probably loses the device vendors warranty, when using his/her own software, because hardware-modification is mandatory to do so.
So in this respect the chromebook is not much more linux-friendly than an xbox-360, except that no modchip needs to be purchased.

well, it may just be me, but I see a significant difference between a company that gives me a well documented way to unlock a device and a manufacturer who sues anyone who makes a modchip to allow customers to unlock devices that they have purchased.

Cannot agree more, I am happy for the washer/jumper. For 199$ it is a fun little project that can start the new generation of hackers.
