Can be, yes, though the GNU tools are both more complete and more functional. But why would one want to? I *prefer* to use tools which, by virtue of their license and the culture which created them and nurtures them, can't be easily subverted in their future development. There are enough junk routers in the world with their quickly hacked and forever invisible BSD sources (kernel and userland). The BSD proponents would have us consider the "use it and forget it" nature of the license as a positive force. In fact, it means in practice, that often stewardship is simply not taken seriously.
