To prevent disappointment (and wasted time?) I'd love to hear from somebody who has experience with it where it stands. I can't use XBMC (that technology is still too immature, imho - too often instability, non-working stuff - and it is terrible to navigate) and I wonder if this is any better.

Have you used the latest XBMC versions (v11/Eden or v12/Frodo)?? It's pretty much a well-finished product, and I don't get any instability nor non-working stuff, and navigation is just like all other media center software in the house... My (lawyer) wife and my kids (13 and 6 yo) have no problem accessing their movies and tv show eps.

I personally would be very surprised if the stability of the Plasma Media Center, which is apparently quite new, was anywhere near that of XBMC, which is a very mature and popular product.
YMMV, of course – I haven't used XBMC in a while but when I did some years ago it was already very good indeed.
