I have never really tried this - but as I still am to update my media center to the latest openSUSE, I might soon :D

To prevent disappointment (and wasted time?) I'd love to hear from somebody who has experience with it where it stands. I can't use XBMC (that technology is still too immature, imho - too often instability, non-working stuff - and it is terrible to navigate) and I wonder if this is any better.

Have you used the latest XBMC versions (v11/Eden or v12/Frodo)?? It's pretty much a well-finished product, and I don't get any instability nor non-working stuff, and navigation is just like all other media center software in the house... My (lawyer) wife and my kids (13 and 6 yo) have no problem accessing their movies and tv show eps.

I'll give it a shot again, then... Does it deal well with external drives and USB sticks?

Sorry for the delay in answering. I don't know if it deals well with external drives and USB sticks, but I will test it in the next two days and I'll get back to you, here...

I personally would be very surprised if the stability of the Plasma Media Center, which is apparently quite new, was anywhere near that of XBMC, which is a very mature and popular product.

YMMV, of course – I haven't used XBMC in a while but when I did some years ago it was already very good indeed.

My family uses it everyday, in three different TV sets, two of them wirelessly connected. The only problem we still have is the (rare -- one file per each two weeks or so) buffering pauses, that apparently occurs because either the algorithm is not optimal or our RAM is much limited. It happens only on some HD files, and only on wifi.
