As someone with zero background on the move:

Does anyone know what triggered the switch? Architecture/protocol issues with the existing platform? Competition from Tent (or others)? Revenue issues at the company? Where does this leave OStatus?

Might be worth an article if there's much going on here in any case.

One of the reasons is perhaps better performance and reduced operating costs:

Can't say I know much more. It's hard to keep up with all the social platforms and protocols popping up every other day...
