ROSA has joined the Steering Committee of Automotive Grade Linux
ROSA representatives have joined the Steering Committee of the Automotive Grade Linux project. ""ROSA has achieved good results in developing software for desktop computers and mobile devices. We have a vision how to make our products useful and attractive for automobiles" - says Vladimir Kryukov, ROSA Product Marketing Director. In particular, at the exhibition in London in autumn 2012, ROSA demonstrated a prototype of ROSA Sputnik in-vehicle infotainment system. The working prototype allows to play multimedia files, see the places of interest by means of excursion modules and construct routes taking into account a large set of criteria. All information can be displayed either at the screen of on-board computer or at the car's windshield. For this purpose, specialized user interface modules were developed that use the Augmented Reality concepts."

FSFE: European Parliament adopts unitary patent
The Free Software Foundation Europe reports that the European Parliament has adopted a proposal to create a patent with unitary effect for Europe. "This decision will leave Europe with a patent system that is both deeply flawed and prone to overreach. It also ends democratic control of Europe's innovation policy." The proposal still needs to be ratified before it will take effect. "
According to the European Parliament's website, "the international agreement creating a unified patent court will enter into force on 1 January 2014 or after thirteen contracting states ratify it, provided that UK, France and Germany are among them."
Google and Facebook join forces against software patents (The H)
A brief has been submitted to the US Court of Appeals; signed by Google, Facebook, Red Hat and several other companies; stating that the combination of an abstract idea and a computer should not be eligible for patent protection. The H takes a look. "The companies argued that such bare-bones claims grant exclusive rights over the abstract idea itself with no limit on how the idea is implemented, and that granting patent protection for such claims would impair, not promote, innovation. In their 30-page brief to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the signatories explain that this often grants exclusive rights to people who haven't themselves contributed significantly to a development, punishing those who later create innovation and cannot market the concrete applications of these abstract ideas unless they pay royalties."
