Porting Linux to the iPod (O'ReillyNet)

O'ReillyNet interviews Bernard Leach about porting Linux to Apple's iPod. "The port uses uClinux, a Linux flavor designed for devices that lack a memory management unit (MMU). While the iPod has some MMU-type capabilities, they are not sufficient to support the Linux kernel. The code is released under the GNU General Public license."

This makes the iPod into an iPod-shaped computer.

I'm compiling a list of things that a reprogrammed but otherwise unmodified iPod might be good for (beyond just playing Ogg files). Please post your ideas here.

For one thing you could just replicate the iPod functionality with one addition: iPod-to-iPod transfers via FW. You could easily shoot music to and from your friends' iPods that way.

This would work even if your friends' iPods are not running Linux. A Linux iPod could enslave a regular iPod and fiddle with its filesystem.

It would be great if you could plug in a FireWire Microphone (do they exist?) and get a gui for controlling levels and recording. Then the iPod could replace professional devices for doing radio interviews, recording concerts, etc...

There is Apple's iSight, a firewire camera and microphone. The iPod's processor could probably handle the audio, but I wonder if it could handle recording video?

The 3rd gen ipod will take a microphone in the headphone jack, and you can in fact record a few seconds of sound that way. No need to mess with firewire. I expect Apple will eventually release dictation features for the ipod, since it's just a matter of software.
