Does anyone know of statics on how many *desktop* users (across all platforms/OS) have a touchpad or touch screen interface? And/or how many gnome[23] users have a touchpad or touchscreen interface?

A number of modern laptops have touchscreens, but they're really inconvenient to use: 'gorilla arm' syndrome arises fast, even if you're not already RSI-prone.

I'm sure the number is greater than 0 in absolute terms but what I'm wondering is what percentage of the target desktop/workstation market has the hardware features gnome-shell seems to be optimizing for.

IMHO - it's fairly insane to imped usability for the person-in-chair-with-keyboard-and-mouse segment for the maybe someday gnome3 on touch-table market. The UI paradigms should be different so such radially different input method and form factors (and indeed the UI is different for the table devices currently on the market).
