Visions of Ka-ching Dance in Their Heads (Groklaw)
The first document is an explanation of Renaissance's reasons for thinking SCO was a good investment. I know you've been wondering what in the world those folks in the stock market have been thinking. The second is an analysis of the SCO v. IBM lawsuit. They are both so blazingly wrong in both facts and conclusions that I fully grasp for the first time how some people may have invested in SCO, based on such misinformation." Worth a read.

At this point in time, I have to believe that the SCO executives are absolutely terrified (they should be; they could be looking at possible prison terms if they've misled investors). It all depends on whether investors like Renaissance were deliberately misled by SCO executives, or whether they just picked up the wrong end of the stick themselves. This could also partly explain the seemingly inexplicable blathering coming from SCO recently (e.g. the "Linux is not free" nonsense from earlier today, in response to HP's indemnification announcement), as being aimed at those investors to try and support SCO's "story". If those investors were ever to discover that Linux is as free as the air we breathe, they might have to dump all of their SCO stock like a ton of bricks. I wouldn't mind betting that deep down, Mr McBride and his crew truly regret going down this path now (or perhaps wish they'd just stuck to their contract dispute with IBM alone). From their standpoint, though, I don't think there's any way they can back down now. The plot thickens.

Thus there is a very strong incentive not to remain poor. It is these incentives that make the United States the great

... A fantasy.. (McBribe & Snotrag), trolls hiding under the bridge, ready to exact a toll..... That image sticks.
Very interesting reading.Did SCO mislead Renaissance?
I really don't see how SCO investors could NOT have been mislead. Mcbribe couldn't Did SCO mislead Renaissance?
have cooked up this whole thing without having any number of upper level types in
SCO invloved. To have VC's involved he would have had to deal with SCO
accountants, lawyers, and I would think at least some of their tech managers at some
point. Either that or he was mislead by those inside SCO, which I seriously doubt.
You are quite right I think that deep down he could be having some big regrets. If he
had keep his focus on IBM and not slander, deceived (remember the SGI code they
claimed was theirs) and just generally stir up a hornets nest. He would have had a
whole lot more credibility, even with the open source community. But as it is now, he
has zero crediblity and I'm sure there are a slew of people who absolutely do not trust
him anymore.
Again your right I think, no back tracking for them. He has defenently put himself in a
position of, damned of you do and damned if you don't.
I don't think "McBribe" has anything to worry about. I understand thatDid SCO mislead Renaissance?
thusfar, ONE Enron related imprisonment has taken place. It might
be two. The rest are in really big trouble, and still stinking rich.
McBribe is and will remain rich, even if SCO ends up somehow taking
a few knocks in the press. Which doesn't seem likely. They , the
big dogs, could walk away from this whole thing right now, and
walk into their new corner offices at Microsoft or Sun, and have no
concerns at all. SCO folds, and the whole thing kinda evaporates,
and the public doubts about the GPL and Linux remain.
In the United States you can go to jail for twenty yearsDid SCO mislead Renaissance?
for stealing a 50 cent packet of chewing gum. (Google
on "three strikes" if you don't believe me.) But only if
you are poor. Once you are rich you can steal millions
of dollars and suffer only the embarrassment of being paid
a handsome sum to leave your job before your contract
expires. At the very worst you might find yourself forced
to sell one of your ski chalets.
