Petition: Share government-developed software under an open source license

A petition is available for signing urging the US government to "Maximize the public benefit of federal technology by sharing government-developed software under an open source license" One of the top three reasons given is "Openness: Open Sourcing ensures basic fairness and transparency by making software and related artifacts available to the citizens who provided funding, consistent with the President’s 2009 declaration that “Information maintained by the Federal Government is a national asset.”" Registration is required to sign the petition. The goal is to get 25,000 signatures by August 16 and they have a long way to go to achieve that goal.

X.Org Foundation achieves non-profit public charity status

The X.Org Foundation has announced that it has been recognized as a non-profit public charity in the U.S., making tax-deductible donations possible. "Contributions to the X.Org Foundation are used to further our mission to support the development of the open source graphics stack based on the X Window System, and to educate students and developers about the technology in the stack."

GStreamer Conference schedule announced

The schedule for this year's GStreamer conference is now available. The conference will be held August 27-28 in San Diego, CA just prior to LinuxCon North America. "In addition to talks about core GStreamer topics like GStreamer 1.0, the GStreamer SDK and hardware enablement with GStreamer 1.0, we can also offer a great selection of talks on related multimedia technologies such as ALSA, Wayland, V4L, OpenGL and Mesa and the Opus Audio Codec this year."

Bitcoin Conference

The Bitcoin Conference will take place September 15-16, 2012 in London, UK. "This conference will be bringing Bitcoin to the mainstream. We will reach out to the general public with primer talks and workshops. We hope for this conference to bring greater opportunities to the community by promoting upcoming talent, and bringing investment to this fledgling economy."

The Linux Foundation Announces Keynote Speakers, Co-located Events for LinuxCon Europe

The Linux Foundation has announced the keynote speakers and the co-located events for LinuxCon Europe. LinuxCon Europe and the Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE) will take place in Barcelona, Spain, November 5-7, 2012. The call for papers for both is open until August 1. Other co-located events include EFL Dev Day, KVM Forum, Yocto Project Developer Day, and more.

PyCon Argentina 2012

PyConAR will take place November 12-17, 2012 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A PostgreSQL mini-conference will be held in parallel with PyConAR sprints.

LCA2013 call for proposals closes

linux.conf.au have closed their call for proposals, achieving a near-record number of proposals since the conference began in 1999. Successful proposals will be announced in September 2012. LCA will be held January 28 - February 2, 2013 in Canberra, Australia.
