Baker: Contributor Imprisoned in Syria
Mitchell Baker has written a blog post expressing Mozilla's support for the Internet-based campaign on behalf of Bassel Khartabil, an open source developer who has been detained in Syria. "Mozilla supports efforts to obtain the release of Bassel Khartabil (also known as Bassel Safadi), a valuable contributor to and leader in the technology community. Bassel’s expertise and focus across all aspects of his work has been in support of the development of publicly available, free, open source computer software code and technology." In addition to Mozilla work, Khartabil has contributed to Creative Commons, Open Clip Art Library, and several other projects. The campaign centers on a petition and letter-writing drive at freebassel.org.
GitHub finally raises funding (GigaOm)
GigaOm reports that GitHub has raised $100 million in venture funding. "The startup will use the funding to hire additional employees and expand to new platforms such as mobile. CEO Tom Preston-Werner said the company hopes to develop new features but also improve existing ones, such as web applications for different operating systems. The idea is to make GitHub useful for a broad range of clients, from individual hackers to large enterprises, and from software developers to designers or authors."
The next GPL: Why it's being shaped on GitHub (InfoWorld)
Simon Phipps writes on Richard Fontana's GPLv3 fork being developed on Github. "To date, Fontana's changes mostly relate to the concerns of the corporate voices in the GPLv3 process. The preamble -- 'an inspiring and important political statement,' according to Fontana -- has been removed, as has the 'How to Apply' appendix. Those simple steps alone dramatically shorten the text. The rest of the changes seem to fix apparently redundant compromises that made their way into the text as part of the negotiation process among all the corporate participants."

He was killed in a bicycle accident, details are still under investigation. This article (in Brazilian Portuguese) has a bit more information.Judge who shelved Apple trial says patent system out of sync (Reuters)
Reuters talks with Richard Posner, a US federal appeals court judge who presided over Apple's lawsuit against Google's Motorola Mobility, and other software patent cases. "Posner said some industries, like pharmaceuticals, had a better claim to intellectual property protection because of the enormous investment it takes to create a successful drug. Advances in software and other industries cost much less, he said, and the companies benefit tremendously from being first in the market with gadgets - a benefit they would still get if there were no software patents."
Ex-Nokia guys start mystery company to build Linux-based phones (VentureBeat)
VentureBeat covers Jolla Mobile, a six-man startup that aims to release MeeGo phones. "Jolla will soon be making announcements about its version of MeeGo as well as a brand new smartphone it’s bringing to market. The company so far is composed of “N9 core professionals and MeeGo community alumni,” the [Twitter] page reads. While N9 folks will be at the helm, there is no intention to offer support for Nokia’s N9 smartphones — more on those later."
