I have a question cannot resist to ask; why something like protocol buffers is not used for device trees, the semantics are very well defined and there are also C bindings for it. It also should make it better suited to boot over other mediums (such as internet).

part of it may be that there is a lot of value in the device tree being human readable and able to be tweaked with a standard text editor.
