Great! It feels like a big hug but it is not touchy-feely; soft but not bland. Good job!

It's saddening that the situation has arisen that it has been felt necessary to take this vote to affirm that which I assumed was implicit about the project.

What made you feel necessary to affirm this motion?

Did people start abusing newbies more then usual on Debian IRC channels or something?

It doesn't seem to talk about bullying others. Only about how people define themselves and that it doesn't matter.

That can actually be a sign of the diversity the statement wants to encourage. (Not necessarily a good sign, though.)

Nothing of the sort.

It is just that, in order to publish anything in the name of the entire project that is not of a strictly technical nature, the Debian constitution requires a GR. Otherwise, either the DPL or the press team would just have issued the very same text as a simple public statement.

The threads to come up with the final version of the text were rather civilized, simple, and moderately sized. Most disagreement was of the sort "but we already do this anyway, do we even need to issue an statement to that effect?"

I find myself curious what 19 voters found objectionable.

My guess would be the sheer tedium of it all.

Seems unlikely, since the option they voted for was "further discussion", which would just lead to more tedium.

They could always wait out the discussion, then vote against again.
No surrendering to the tedium!

Maybe by a form of "diversity"? :-)
