One thing that I think people are not accounting for is the fact that RedHat sysV init scripts tend to be especially bad, with scripts calling other scripts taht source other scripts that read and parse config files.... so that you have to dig many layers down to figure out what's happening.
SysV init scripts don't need to be nearly this complicated, and on other distros they aren't.
