Why not a PulseAudio backend, since it's what most Linux systems use, and also matches the Vista/7 architecture?

When PulseAudio is a distribution's default sound system, it is already configured to be the default ALSA device.

Maarten Lankhorst is working on that: <http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/multimedia.git>. It seems to work, at least well enough to run Windows games that work with pure ALSA under PulseAudio too, without the horrible latency problems which you get if you run upstream Wine in conjunction with the PulseAudio ALSA plugin.
