EFF: Ubuntu 12.04 will bring OS-level privacy options

The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) blog has an article on new privacy features in the upcoming Ubuntu release. "Retrofitting operating systems to support privacy against local attackers is a worthy objective, but not an easy one. We hope that Ubuntu and other projects will be in this for the long haul. The first step is probably defining clear API and mechanisms to enable non-GNOME applications to be told about the user's preferences for logging, and opening a lot of bug reports to get them respected. For now, you can now delete your GNOME activity log from the past hour, day, week, a specific date range, or everything stored on your computer."

Linux gets a bigger shield against patent attacks (InfoWorld)

Simon Phipps comments on the expansion of the Open Innovation Network's patent protection umbrella. "Too bad there's a sinister underbelly to this good news: what's omitted. Most notably, Android -- which is based on the Linux kernel -- is missing from the list altogether, along with its Dalvik language interpreter. Moreover, the definition is now so broad that two of the founders, Sony and Phillips, are concerned their products will be affected and have effectively reserved the right to sue the Linux community."
