Yes, and the only reason it's so limited is that the Unix shell paradigm doesn't allow anything better. Which was the point all along. Is that so hard to understand?

Except when worse is worse. Case in point that has been raised before here: the Windows Command Prompt. It's worse than xterm, the Linux console, and screen(1). It's also... worse.
