Using "nik" on the end is NOT necessarily a reference to soviets. There is a term here in the US... beatnik. And when I heard the "nik" that's what I thought of... and I'm guessing a lot of other states people will think of and perhaps where the originator got it from.

Of course if you look at the origin of beatnik, according to the wikipedia page anyway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatnik) it says that it was coined from Sputnik which was launched about six months prior.

Anyway, words change and get adopted and change again... so don't assume they have a particular meaning just because that is the way where it is wherever you are.

Refusenik, as a word, does refer to Soviet era events. Wiktionary gives the definition as "1. (Soviet Union, slang) One of the Jewish citizens of the former Soviet Union who were refused permission to emigrate. 2. (colloquial) A person characterized by a particular refusal (especially one related to human rights.)" Whatever the intent, I think it was a very poor choice of words.
