And if the way systemd works is so superior why don't the BSD people come up with a similar BSD-specific solution. Last I heard was that the BSD kernel has most of the features needed.

There could also be political or social reasons: the BSD community tends to be very conservative.

When did they give up /etc/rc.local?
Gentoo didn't have Sys V init, but a "BSD inspired" start up, which is only Linux I remember using without Sys V init.
