There is an interesting snippet in an e-mail from Anil Gulecha to the Debian derivatives list:

I'd like to work for Nexenta to become more of an official offshoot of upstream distributions. (Source)

Has progress been made here? The idea of a Debian GNU/Illumos is entertaining :).
