Hands-on with MeeGo's Tablet UX (Linux.com)

Over at Linux.com, Nathan Willis tries out the developer preview of the MeeGo 1.2 Tablet UX (user experience). "If you are an application developer, the Tablet UX preview gives you a nice playground in which to imagine your app. The real mettle will be shown when MeeGo 1.2 is officially released and a tablet SDK comes along. For now, all you need to know is that MeeGo tablets are going to provide as smooth a user experience as Android. Under the hood, you have a different set of questions to consider, but the MeeGo APIs are not substantially different between the various UXes."

Do we really want a new SDK? Or do we just want a compatible env for Android apps? I would say both, but providing only the former seems risky to me...

I think having a mobile platform which is free and actually is Linux would be a good thing (Android is Google/Linux as opposed to GNU/Linux, so to say).

Not sure what 'we' in general want, but personally I greatly prefer developing real Linux apps to the android stuff.

There's a lot to wish for with Android.

I'd rather see MeeGo get off the ground though. I've been rooting for MeeGo quite a while.

The SDK is more that just runtime environment. It includes the IDE supporting the APIs, toolchains for various architectures, plus compilation targets & QEMU emulator images. All of which already exist for the handset/netbook UXes. So yes, we do want that for the tablet UX as well.

How about a product I can actually buy? (The Wetab was a joke.)

Care to elaborate on the joke? What's so bad about it? Seems pretty neat and has a very polished feeling when holding it.

These days it appears only Apps and user-experience matter. Would love to see a Davlik on Meego(or any other platform, e.g. yocto) to run android apps, while has a real Linux env underneath.

UX == user experience.
