Ubuntu Shipit Discontinued

Canonical has announced the end of the ShipIt program. "Technology moves on and as we look at ways to spread Ubuntu further, a CD distribution programme, especially one of that size and delivered in that way, makes less sense. We have been slowly easing back the programme over the last two years to limit the number of CDs per person and the number of times a person could apply for a CD. But for Ubuntu 11.04 you will no longer be able to go to our website and apply for a free CD." CDs will still be available for Ubuntu Local Communities. The company will also be launching a free online trial for Ubuntu.

What on earth does this mean?

The article link has a little more info:

And still, I have no idea what a "free online trial for Ubuntu" could be. Presumably, as it's a trial, it's some strange new money-making strategy.

I'm all for Canonical transitioning into a sustainable business model, but they have historically not been very good at doing so in a way that respects freedom (c.f. their partly closed cloud stuff).

Sounds like they are going to offer Ubuntu virtual machines that you can access through a web browser. Back in 2004 it was already possible to run a VNC or NX client in the browser using a Java applet--today you could probably do it all using AJAX.
