There was a typo in the article, it should have read
"Microsoft has announced that it will be contributing to any project that is an alternative to anything Google."

Well, in the process of fighting Google, maybe they'll learn something about freedom. And maybe not. We'll see.

Microsoft already has their own map product. http://www.bing.com/maps/

I doubt they see openstreetmap as a potential competitor to Google maps.

You must have not gotten the memo. Microsoft hired the openstreetmap founder, and added a OSM layer to bing maps:
