Just for the record, the migration to NetworkManager has been extremely smooth for a number of reasons:
- NetworkManager replaced very little of an "API". I mean, there was not much legacy to support; there were not that many 3rd-party applications messing with sysconfig-network (or equivalent). Most applications just want network connectivity period.
- NetworkManager made an incomplete but significant effort to support previous configuration files.
- At all times and still today, it was/is possible not to use NetworkManager and revert to the previous tools.
- It is even possible to make this choice on a per-interface basis.
