Apache Software Foundation releases SpamAssassin 3.3.0 (The H)

The H covers the release of Spamassassin 3.3.0, the first major update since May of 2007. "In addition to the usual bug fixes, the latest release features major changes in how SpamAssassin rules, the patterns that help identify spam, are updated. From version 3.3.0, rules have been separated from SpamAssassin's core. Previously optional in version 3.2.x, rules are now downloaded over a network using the built-in automatic software update tool, known as "sa-update". Alternatively, users can also install rule updates from a tar archive using sa-update. Other notable changes include improved IPv6 support and error handling, improvements to the DKIM plugin and support for Distributed Checksum Clearinghouses (DCC) reputations."

hey corbet, I responded to this article earlier today (see comment 371349) but it doesn't show up as a reply to this article. Is this a bug in your site?

The comment you mention is not published; mostly likely you got to the preview page and didn't do that final click on the "Publish" button. Occasionally that burns somebody, but I really believe in looking at comments before making them public...

Off topic but IMO your approach is the correct one.

This towards not shipping any default rules (or data) and relying on downloading is a bit worrisome, because it violates the rule of least surprise. Users expect that the package they download/install is at least marginally usable. Another example of this is OpenTTD which requires the downloading of graphics before the game will even start.

A tarball of rules is available on the download page if you don't want to (or can't) use sa-update.

SpamAssassin is a bit of a special case. Because it has to be integrated
into your email processing chain, it *already* isn't usable immediately
after download: you *already* have to read a bunch of stuff before getting
it working, and by its very nature virtually everyone using it will have
an Internet connection. (I'd hope most people are already running
sa-update, as well, in which case this 'new' requirement isn't going to be
strange to them at all.)
