helpmysql.org. I don't want to make any accusations, but the only place I can think of is from
registering at mysql.com and I wonder why he would still have access to the list of accounts from
there, presuming it was transferred to Sun.
There might be some other obvious source I'm not thinking of, but it was quite surprising when I
had an email from him turn up in my inbox today.

Hi
The ongoing MySQL campaign
I work with Monty, although I've been on vacation for these past days so wasn't involved.
If you got email from Monty personally, then most likely you have had some email discussion with him in the past why he would have your email. (Such as, on MySQL mailing lists.) We are of course still quite close with many of our friends and former collagues still at Sun, but no, we wouldn't have access to the MySQL.com email database.

personal email correspondence with anyone at MySQL, let alone Monty.
If you let me know the email address that was used, I can investigate when I return to work tomorrow. (My work email is hingo@askmonty.org)

As far as I know, there is no email database as such, people are just forwarding the email to their friends and contacts. If you got it from Monty, then somehow he has your address.
