What's the fix? Other than abandoning the Unix mbox format (and forcing everyone around the world to do likewise)?

The fix is simple: de-quote the ">From " line when you read mbox files.
It's reversible, after all. There's even an RFC for it. :-P

Alternatively, you could use a mail delivery agent and mail reader which agree on one of the formats named mbox that doesn't corrupt messages.

Actually, evolution rarely but often enough to be annoying inserts a quote mark on some of my outgoing mails.

Thunderbird removes the first space from lines for some unknown reason.
