git has long since grown options for dealing with line endings across all platforms.

deciding that he wants to use a tool written in python instead of C is his privilage, but if that's the reason he should say so, not take the 'gut feeling' position

Mercurial has support as well, and a casual bystander would be hard pressed to understand what
was wrong with it for Python's use...
