Will The G1 Continue To Get One? (Linux Journal)

Linux Journal looks at updates for the Android G1 mobile phone. "Like any device, the G1 has certain physical limitations — only so much stuff can fit in the case, and among the stuff being stuffed in is its memory. Apparently, according to one of Google's developers, not enough memory was stuffed when the stuffing was good, and now G1 owners may find themselves short on updates."

Will The G1 Continue To Get One? (Linux Journal)

Since the G1 has a micro-SD slot, there's no real flash shortage in the phone. It's just that so far T-Mobile (or somebody) has insisted that nothing commercial live on this storage, since it's removable and thus could conceivably be used to nefarious ends.

I'm not sure what's wrong with the obvious strategy of encrypting proprietary stuff stored on SD with a per-device key stored on the phone's internal storage.

It's possible to move app installation from internal storage onto SD through rooting the phone...or so I heard. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OrSoIHeard)

Now that I have a double-capacity (and double-sized, alas) battery in it I'm really happy with my G1. The keyboard, which I didn't care about much when I got it, has turned out to be a huge win. I hope the G1 will stay viable for many more years...
