So yes, it works on any kernel, as long as you have the source available. This is not new, and this is not what is being announced here. What is new here is the specific support for Ubuntu. Everything is now integrated in a GUI and users probably don't need to have the sources installed, because everything is pre-compiled for (the specifically supported) Ubuntu kernels.
