Doesn't the author have anything more important to write about?

Ususally. Perhaps it was a slow news day. Our editor (Jon) writes brilliant articles, mostly about the Linux kernel and contemporary issues facing Linux and Open Source. Perhaps it was a slow news day, or perhaps the release of Okular (and its default configuration of enabling DRM) was a topic Jon felt pertinent to write about.

I can't believe that I just paid for a 6 month subscription to LWN, only to read this.

Rest assured that your subscription money was well-spent. Keep coming to LWN—I'm certain that you'll find the quality of the articles and commentary is worth it.
