New Online Community for Developers of Embedded Linux Devices (LinuxElectrons)
'Linux is based on the idea of sharing knowledge, and there are strong underpinnings of this throughout the Linux community, yet there isn't a place for embedded Linux developers to go to collaborate and experience that sense of community,' said Joerg Bertholdt, Vice President of Marketing at MontaVista Software. 'Now, through Meld we want all embedded Linux device developers to come together to share their knowledge, collaborate with one another, and speed the design of innovative, commercial solutions running on embedded Linux. A strong community benefits all of its members and we believe this forum will allow Linux to grow and prosper in embedded devices.'"

I can understand your concern, however, if you check out Meld, you will find that MontaVista employees, although do participate in Meld, really focus on helping members with their problems and not pushing our products on them. If we believe our products will help them with their problems, then we may suggest using MontaVista to help solve those problems, but we also suggest other ways to remedy the issue that do not involve purchasing MontaVista products.
>> Especially when the website has their domain-name on it.
With our domain name on it (meld.mvista.com), we're definitely not trying to hide that we're powering this site. I hope this lends to being out in the open.
>> How free will people be to criticize companies and their products on a web site operated by a company with a stake in the game.
I encourage you to come over to meld.mvista.com and express your thoughts there and find out how free you are to comment/criticize.

Seriously, there is at least one per architecture and lot of knowledgable people there.

Most of it isn't about Embedded Linux, so it's good if a development community focused on that emerges. Well, of course there are such communities already. It'll be interesting if a better one emerges :-)

>> Why don't people just post on main Linux mailing lists?
Good question. MontaVista has worked with many open source communities since our inception 10 years ago, and we're the top embedded company to contribute to the Linux kernel. With this experience and history, we have found that there is no community that is exclusively focused on embedded Linux. They either focus on specific areas of Linux related technology, or are more generalized Linux communities. Let me explainÂ…
Existing Linux communities focus on developing open source projects, this includes Enterprise, desktop and embedded. For example like glibc, the Linux kernel, and hundreds of userland applications, developers are focused on improving their specific software projects and has little to do with other micro-communities. There is overlap of community members; however there is relatively little overlap between software in these communities.
Meld fills this gap by providing an environment to pull the software from all these communities together for the purpose of delivering embedded devices.

I'd love to find out where good embedded development discussion goes on and see how other people are doing things.

There is a linux-embedded mailing list for kernel stuff. elinux.org (CELF) contains good info but no forum/list SFAIK, and is one of the few places that is not distro-specific. There are numerous other channels and lists for specific distros (handhelds, OE, buildcross, PTXdist), but there is a bit of a dearth of places for general discussion about how things are best done. It's a fragmented community and a lot of things _are_ distro/architecture/hardware specific but there is also a place for wider discussion. I reckon CELF is better-placed than most to fill such a role, but it's always hard to achieve critical mass in these things.
Company-sponsored fora _can_ be very good (See the Navitron forum for a successful and useful example in a different field (Renewable Energy), but usually aren't, and the problem of censorship/self-censorship is always there.
