Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 ends on May 31

Oh thank goodness. Now my workplace can force its customers to upgrade to
something that didn't come out of the Ark.

(I spent Friday working around a zsh crash bug patched in 2004. It might
have been fixed in errata, but to a man these customers never, ever, ever
install errata because they might break things. We have to work around
every bug we see, instead, even if the workaround is itself really
intrusive and risky.)

I feel your pain. We're just getting off Solaris 8 ...

Same here with HP-UX 10.20. Hoping to get rid of our last K class system by the end of the summer... Theses are real beasts, 24/7 since 1999 :)

Being able to force customers to upgrade was my original thought too, but unbelievably, we have boxes running Red Hat Linux 7.2 ... *shakes head*

Wow-ee. I suppose those boxes are doing something very boring and Just
Work and everyone forgets about them? I have one or two of those still
running kernel 2.0.36, because, well, they work. (And they're not in a
remotely hostile environment.)

If the customers never install errata, then why would they care that no new errata for RHEL 2.1 will be issued after May 31st? They can keep on running the old code as long as they want (and expect you to support it).

Obviously I don't know the specifics of nix's situation, but often there are contractual requirements that you support something as long as the original vendor does. Once the vendor drops support for a product, many times you are allowed to do so as well (by the terms of the contract--of course getting all legal in your customers' faces is not always the best strategy... but if this situation is costing the company enough money in support/maintenance, it can be worth it anyway).

Ex*act*ly. These are banks, and the machines are running Oracle. If RHEL
goes out of its support window, my understanding is Oracle won't support
it either, so the banks scream in fear and scramble to upgrade.

There's nothing at all to stop people from running it. They can even provide their own security errata if they have enough money to pay programmers to do that.

However I wouldn't really recommend people run RHEL 2.1 anywhere near the internet unless they can do their own security.
