Current release status

Linus has announced the 2.5.24 development kernel. Changes this time include a lot of janitorial fixes, an NTFS update, a bunch of JFS fixes, an ALSA update, more kbuild changes, Martin Dalecki's IDE 93 patch which "should undo the damage of IDE 92", and various other fixes and updates. This will be the last kernel release from Linus before he heads off to the Kernel Summit and OLS. The long-format changelog is also available.

From the Kernel Summit meeting room Dave Jones has released 2.5.24-dj1. The list of new changes is short; it includes fixes from the 2.4.19 release candidate, more cpufreq work, and a few other tweaks.

Just want to say thank you

I see that most announcements about 2.5.x kernels don't have any comments. That's not surprizing - people working with 2.5.x kernels are busy fixing and improving them. Those "sitting" on the 2.4.x branch may not feel right to comment on 2.5.x kernels - it's not Slashdot, where it's a commonplace to comment on articles without reading them.

I just want to reassure the editors that those reports are very important. I always read them to see if there is anything that can affect the drivers I'm working on. In particular, the information about devicefs I found in one of the LWN reports was important for me, and I'm already planning for using it in my driver when it's compiled with the new kernels.

I'm going to try the next kernel when the new build system by Keith Owens is merged. I hope it will happen soon, and I read every announcement to see if it has been merged.

Good job, LWN editors! Thank you.

Merging kbuild

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like kbuild will get merged anytime soon. If and when it does happen, it will be done piecemeal over a number of releases, unless Linus changes his mind. Kbuild is not on the agenda at the kernel summit next week, and Keith Owens will not be there, but I wouldn't be surprised if the topic came up anyway. Stay tuned...
