Palm needs Nova to shine (San Francisco Chronicle)

The San Francisco Chronicle looks at another entry into the Linux-based mobile phone space. Palm is expected to unveil "Nova" as a replacement for Palm OS on both phones and mobile internet devices. "Palm is poised to make what some analysts are calling its last stand at this week's Consumer Electronics Show, where it is expected to introduce its long-awaited Linux-based operating system. [...] Code-named Nova, it will power a new generation of smart phones and potentially other devices. The move is Palm's best chance to get back into the smart phone market, which it pioneered with its Treo handsets and later ceded to companies such as BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion and Apple with its iPhone."

I absolutely love how all US news sources think that the smartphone world consists of Windows Mobile, Iphone and lately RIM devices. When Symbian has more market share then those tree combined, yet it is rarely mentioned and yes I know it isn't as dominant in the US as the rest of the world.

I assume that there's some sarcasm in your comment. That being said, even as an American I agree with you that there's too much lip service to the big-name proprietary smartphone OSes.

But, there's wind of change in the air. Especially considering Google's Android phone has a consumer-grade version. Even my Dad (who's an average joe consumer) has interest in the G1.

Apple could release total crap and its legions of loyal fans would still buy it1. Google is new in this arena, so it has lots to prove. Palm has seen its market share dwindle in the past few years, so its Linux-based Nova is a welcome sign. Other than Symbian as you mentioned, that leaves... Microsoft's Windows Mobile/CE. I'm unsure what forward development MS has in the phone arena, but many people like to use associative thinking and assume that MS's phone OS is no different than its desktop/laptop OS2.

The good news is that consumers, American, or otherwise, are the winners. I'm a Linux fan, so I can only hope that Palm's Nova (and Google's Android) succeed.

1 I do not mean to imply that Apple releases "total crap", but I'm too much of a Linux fan to be interested in Apple products at the moment. I do not own an iPhone nor an iPod, and after reading this article I'm not planning on owning either anytime in the foreseeable future.

2 Interpret this as you wish, and/or insert your opinion about Microsoft here.

Much as I appreciate that they're using Linux, I've not seen enough of Nova to convince me that Palm has a chance in heck at this late date. But then, I've had trouble believing that Symbian had long-term legs, even when they were paying me for advice. I'd love to see what differentiates Palm's new platform.

Android seems to have a leg up on the others. And I have not given up on OpenMoko's various efforts, although their last software platform seems to have been a false start. OpenMoko gets the "openness" part better than Google does so far.

By the way, "no va" is a terrible name if you consider what it means in Spanish. How'd they miss Chevy's experience?

Oops. I'll have to check out the story of the initial "Got Milk" campaign in Spanish now...

"Nova" is confused with "no va" in Spanish only if you're not a native Spanish speaker.
