If the journal is not the primary means of accessing the filesystem, but just an additional database of filepaths, saved in a file on the filesystem and explicitly updated/written to by the applications creating the files then things get much better. Particularly if the file references in the journal can be tagged (automatically by the creator application or manually by the user). At a minimum, a tag naming the creator application simplifies searching greatly.
