Wow?

What I really worry about is that even after I know that my OS and application software are Free, and find a NIC, and other peripheral cards with Free firmware... how do I know that the machines that made all my hardware were running Free software, and that any firmware their components might require was Free. If I call and ask the manufacturer, they could just lie about it.
