Subject:  [Acl-Devel] Version 0.8.56 of the kernel patches released
Date:  Sun, 6 Apr 2003 05:29:53 +0200 (CEST)

Hello,

I have just released version 0.8.56 of the kernel patches. Relative
to the last stable release the following major things have changed:

* If the client and the server side is upgraded, ACLs over NFS will
work now. For that you need to enable NFSv3 and the NFS ACL
protocol extensions in the kernel configuration. The protocol
  used is compatible with Solaris.

* Stephen C. Tweedie found a locking order problem leading to a
deadlock, most easily trigered over NFS. (Reported by Stephen
  C. Tweedie <sct@redhat.com>).

* On Alpha, the number of entries in the system call table was not
adjusted to account for the xattr system calls. (Reported by
  Dennis Henriksen <opus@osrl.net>).

* Due to a bug in the meta block cache (fs/mbcache.c), extended
attribute block sharing was effectively disabled.

* After reactivating EA sharing, another bug in the sharing code
leading to a missing brelse() turned up. This bug was fixed today.
Since EA sharing was not activated in the most recent versions
prior to 0.8.56, this does not immediately affect users.

Upgrades for the other packages and patches are on my list, and will
follow shortly.

RECOMMENDATION TO UPGRADE

You should upgrade is you are using the ACL patches on a server that
also is an NFS server, even if you are not planning to use the
NFS ACL extensions. (The deadlock bug could trigger even without using
ACLs). Other than that, there is no urgent need to upgrade. You may
still be interested in ACL support over NFS, though.

If you are using one of the 0.8.56 release candidates: rc1 had a few
bugs in the NFS ACL protocol code, and rc2 had the brelse bug
described above. Therefore, please upgrade to 0.8.56 as well.

Regards,
Andreas.
