3rd party repos are great ways to track the latest greatest tools for things like emacs. Sure
it may break but on my Ubuntu system I have emacs21 and emacs22 to fall back to if my snapshot
breaks.

Obviously I wouldn't be quite so caviler with system components like the kernel or filesystem
tools. Having said that at home I run Gentoo which does allow me to build a system where I can
make a choice between testing and stable for which packages I want.
